Having just wrapped up the June 19th voyage on the Spectrum of the Seas, I realized that there’s so much more to this magnificent ship than what most guides cover. If you’re someone who appreciates the little joys in life, here are 11 lesser-known experiences onboard that you absolutely shouldn’t miss.
1. The 15th Deck at Midnight
After 11 PM, the 15th deck transforms into a tranquil oasis. By midnight, it’s almost entirely deserted. You might even spot crew members jogging or engaging in a friendly soccer match on the sports court. The deck remains beautifully illuminated, offering a perfect backdrop for stunning nighttime photography.
2. Stargazing at the Ship’s Stern
Head to the aft of the ship at night to witness the mesmerizing sight of the moon casting its glow over the endless ocean. Listen to the soothing sounds of the wake and let your thoughts drift with the waves.
3. The Elevator Pianist
Imagine stepping into an elevator and being greeted by a live pianist! This cheerful musician brings joy to passengers with lively tunes as they move between decks. I stumbled upon him twice in the elevator and once at a cozy corner on the Royal Promenade. It’s like encountering a delightful NPC in a real-life game—unexpected and utterly charming.
4. Rock Climbing and Speed Climbing Competitions
Don’t be intimidated by the rock wall—it’s more accessible than it looks. Lines are usually short, and even beginners with a bit of athleticism can reach the top on their first try. Participating in the speed climbing competitions adds an extra thrill and a sense of accomplishment.
5. Café @ Two70
Often overlooked, Café @ Two70 is a hidden culinary gem. While the main dining room sees long queues during sea day lunches, this café offers plenty of seating with panoramic ocean views. The menu includes tasty options like mini burgers, sandwiches, stir-fried noodles, sweet and sour fish bites, salads, desserts, and fresh fruits.
6. Nighttime Views of Busy Sea Lanes
A late-night stroll on the 15th deck reveals a surprising sight: a procession of ships dotting the horizon, their lights shimmering like stars. It’s a beautiful reminder of how bustling the sea lanes are, even in the dead of night.
7. The Solarium: An Adult Retreat
This 18+ oasis is a haven of peace, even on busy sea days. Perhaps it’s the age restriction that keeps it serene. With a refreshing cold pool, soothing hot tubs, and comfortable loungers, it’s the perfect spot to relax away from the lively main pools.
8. The Music Hall
Music enthusiasts, this one’s for you. The Music Hall hosts frequent live performances and events. Check the daily schedule on the ship’s app and immerse yourself in the vibrant musical atmosphere. It’s one of the places I found myself returning to again and again.
9. Exploring the Ship’s Interior at Midnight
When the clock strikes twelve and most activities wind down, the ship’s interior takes on an almost magical quality. The spaces are still brilliantly lit but blissfully quiet, offering a unique opportunity to admire and photograph the ship’s stunning architectural details without the crowds.
10. Delightful Towel Animals
After your room is serviced each day, you’ll find an adorable towel animal waiting on your bed. Each day brings a new creature, adding a touch of whimsy and a guaranteed smile to your face.
11. Join Competitions and Win Medals
Get involved in the ship’s array of competitions and you might just snag a medal! Whether it’s basketball, soccer, rock climbing, table tennis, sudoku, or trivia games like guessing car logos, national flags, or song titles, there’s something for everyone. Pro Tip: Pack the Right Gear
To fully enjoy these hidden gems, make sure to pack sportswear, formal attire, and swimwear. With activities ranging from rock climbing and pool lounging to elegant evening events, having the right clothing ensures you’re ready for every adventure onboard.
