The year 2024 marks a significant milestone for Hong Kong’s cruise tourism industry. On October 23rd, Kevin Yeung, the Secretary for Culture, Sports, and Tourism of Hong Kong, announced the government’s focused efforts to revitalize the cruise tourism sector, making Hong Kong a premier cruise hub in Asia. With a total of 30 cruise lines expected to visit the city—up from just 18 in 2023—Hong Kong is experiencing a major boost in its appeal as a cruise destination. The number of non-local cruise passengers is projected to reach around 330,000 this year, which represents a 50% increase compared to the 220,000 passengers recorded in 2023.
This surge in cruise tourism brings direct benefits to the local economy. In 2023, cruise travelers embarking or disembarking in Hong Kong spent an average of HKD 3,000 per person during their onshore visits, highlighting the economic value that the cruise industry contributes to the region. From shopping to dining and cultural attractions, the influx of visitors is set to uplift various sectors of Hong Kong’s economy.
The Hong Kong government has also laid out ambitious plans for 2025 and beyond. Efforts are underway to further promote the “Fly-Cruise” and “Rail-Cruise” programs, which aim to attract more international travelers by providing convenient and integrated travel options. These programs, leveraging Hong Kong’s world-class airport and growing rail connectivity, provide seamless transitions from air or rail to sea, allowing travelers to embark on luxurious cruise adventures effortlessly. The government’s initiatives are also aligned with Mainland China’s policies that are increasingly supportive of cruise tourism, creating an opportunity for Hong Kong to position itself as a major gateway for regional cruise travel.
By expanding these offerings, Hong Kong aims to establish new cruise itineraries connecting with ports across Mainland China, creating a rich and diverse cruising experience for travelers. These new routes will allow passengers to explore a wider range of cultural and scenic locations, making Hong Kong the ideal starting point for discovering the beauty and diversity of the region.
